_ 'Mann Makht und Gott Lakht': Man Makes, God laughs. This (paraphrased) Yiddish aphorism and Ecclesiastical worldview animates my work: today's garbage dump (itself a spontaneous abstract work of art) is inevitably tomorrow's archeological excavation; the vast majority of civilization's creations, inventions and ideas, past and future, from amulets worn by our Ice Age ancestors to tomorrow's corporate gobbledygook, all these things are ephemeral.
Yet some treasures endure; rummaging through history's dumpster I seek out the relics, images, symbols, scripts and patterns which have made us what we are, resuscitate and integrate them in a new yet timeless context as whimsical as it is serious: Canaanite deities perched along New Jersey's Pulaski Skyway; pop cameos on Marginal Street; tattered maps, medieval etchings, Vegas go-go matchbooks and Depression era posters all reborn in my work, to be contemplated by a world as resilient as it is fragile, a world just as fleeting as the ones these relics left behind.
Inspiration is drawn from unexpected places and experiences. I can personally attest to the effect that corporate life has had on my work. Go figure.
